MTEL Test Overview
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education started The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure® (MTEL®) program to assess communication and literacy skills and knowledge of subject matter of all teachers from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve as well as instructors in vocational, technical and adult education. The goal is to ensure that educators can communicate effectively with students, parents and peers.
The MTEL® tests measure reading comprehension, writing clarity and the depth and breadth of knowledge of a particular subject. The MTEL test includes multiple choice, short-answer and essay questions. They are criterion-referenced and objective-based, which means the candidate is rated according to an established standard and not judged relative to other candidates. Each test has its own passing score. Faculty members at Massachusetts’ colleges and universities and instructors in vocational, technical and adult education programs approved test objectives. The MTEL® test meets the licensing regulations required by the state of Massachusetts for teachers of all academic grade levels as well as vocational, technical and adult education instructors.
The MTEL® program includes the following tests:
Communication And Literacy Skills measures knowledge of and competency in reading and writing. The reading section has multiple-choice and short-answer questions on comprehension and specific vocabulary questions. The writing section measures four areas: summary (one open-response question), composition (one open-response question), grammar and usage (multiple-choice and short answer questions), and mechanics (multiple-choice questions).
Academic, Pre-Kindergarten Through Twelfth Grade tests depth and breadth of knowledge of a specific subject area using multiple-choice, short answer and essay questions.
Vocation, Technical Literacy Skills measures knowledge of and competency in reading and writing. The reading section is comprised of multiple-choice questions. The writing section measures three areas: summary (one open-response question), composition and grammar (one open-response question), and mechanics (multiple-choice questions).
Adult Basic Education areas include English language arts, English for Speakers of Other Languages, math, history and social science, and science. Multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions are used.
