The MTEL Biology Test contains a multiple-choice section of 100 questions. In addition, there is an open-response section containing two open response assignments. These responses should be answered in 150- 300 words, or one to two pages each. Candidates are given a total of four hours to complete the exam.
Candidates taking the MTEL Biology Test are encouraged to study the human biology subareas of the principles of heredity, cells and cell theory, scientific inquiry, the characteristics of organisms, and how energy, matter and life evolve in ecosystems, to prepare for the multiple choice questions.
The open response questions of the MTEL Biology Test are designed to demonstrate the candidate's facility in comprehending the subject matter both concretely and abstractly. Candidates will be asked to apply their knowledge to specific situations that could occur in one or more of the subareas in the study of biology. Written responses in the MTEL Biology Test will be evaluated based on how well the candidate accomplishes the assignment's purpose, demonstrates knowledge of the subject, provides appropriate supporting evidence, and makes an argument based upon a solid rationale.
