The MTEL Communication and Literacy Skills Test contains reading and writing subtests.

The reading subtest includes several reading selections together with 42 multiple-choice questions. The subtest areas include word definitions, main idea and supporting details, the writer's purpose, relationships between ideas, critical reasoning skills, and summarizing and organizing information provided in graphic form. Each of the subtests of the MTEL Communication and Literacy Skills Test reading portion carries an equal weight of 16.7% of the total test grade.

The writing portion of the MTEL Communication and Literacy Skills Test addresses four areas using 35 multiple-choice questions. Questions about the main idea account for 15% of the overall grade. Grammar and usage questions are 10%. Punctuation, spelling and capitalization are 10%, and editing sentence errors is 15%.
