The MTEL Early Childhood Test, like other subject matter MTEL tests, is composed of 100 multiple-choice questions as well as two open-response assignments. The Early Childhood multiple-choice questions account for 80% of the overall test grade. Each of the two open-response assignments requires written answers, valued at 10% of the total grade each.
The multiple-choice questions in the MTEL Early Childhood Test are organized around three subareas. Questions pertaining to Knowledge of Child Development are 25% of the test's total weight. Core Knowledge in the Content Areas takes the greatest focus, at 40% of the overall score. Knowledge of Children's Literature and the Writing Process provides an additional 15% of the total score.
Two open-response questions account for the remaining 20% of the MTEL Early Childhood Test. These questions focus on the candidate's ability to integrate abstract concepts concerning history, language arts, social sciences, science and mathematics with practical approaches to teaching them in real-world situations.
