MTEL Earth Science Test

The MTEL Earth Science Test focuses on six subareas. They include the Nature of Science, Meteorology, Geology, Astronomy, Oceanography and Freshwater Systems, and Integration of Knowledge and Understanding. Like most other MTEL subject matter tests, the Earth Science Test is organized into 100 multiple-choice questions and two open- response assignments.

Except for the subarea of Integration of Knowledge and Understanding, the remaining five subareas, which are examined in a multiple-choice format, are each given 16% of the total weight of the final score. This means the accumulated weight of the multiple choice questions is 80% of the total score.

The remaining category, Integration of Knowledge and Understanding, is addressed in the open-response section which contains two questions. Each of these responses is worth 10% of the MTEL Earth Science Test score. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to relate abstract concepts to practical applications. These responses will be between 150 and 300 words, and must offer evidence of the candidate's depth of understanding of the material.
