The MTEL Elementary School Mathematics test evaluates test-takers competency in four subareas. The test itself is organized into a multiple-choice section, and an open-response section.
The multiple-choice section of the MTEL Elementary School Mathematics Test carries an overall weight of 80% of the final score. Of this, 30% is assigned to multiple-choice questions concerned with Number Sense, Data Analysis and Operations. The remaining two subareas focus on Patterns, Relations, and Algebra; and Geometry and Measurement. These two subareas are assigned 25% of the total test weight each.
In the open-response section of the MTEL Elementary School Mathematics Test, the candidate is given the opportunity to demonstrate a degree of theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding in two written responses to brief essay questions.
