The MTEL English as a Second Language Test contains, in total, 100 multiple-choice questions in four subareas, as well as four open-response questions which require oral responses. The multiple-choice section accounts for 80% of the overall score. Each of the oral response questions are worth a total of 5% of the final score. Specific areas of assessment include the examinee's proficiency with narrative speaking, conversational speaking, and argumentative or persuasive modes of speaking. Finally, the oral open response section of the MTEL English as a Second Language Test requires the candidate read from a script or other written material in order to demonstrate competency with fluency and pronunciation.
