MTEL English Test

Both 100 multiple choice questions and two open response questions compose the MTEL English test.

The multiple choice questions each offer four possible correct responses. Multiple choice questions are concerned with three subareas: Rhetoric and Composition; Literature and Language; and Reading Theory, Research and Instruction. Collectively, the multiple choice questions account for 80% of the MTEL English Test. Literature and Language questions contribute 51% to the total score. The subarea of Rhetoric and Composition provides 17%. Reading Theory, Research and Instruction account for 12% of the final grade of the MTEL English Test.

Two open response questions address the remaining subarea, Integration of Knowledge and Understanding. Candidates are given writing prompts designed to demonstrate their depth of knowledge and ability to apply abstractions to concrete situations in short written responses between 150 and 300 words in length. This portion of MTEL English Test accounts for the remaining 20 percent of the candidate's final grade.
