MTEL Health Education Test

The MTEL Health Education Test organizes the test material in five content subareas. Candidates should be prepared to address the subareas of personal health, resource management and community health, family and emotional health, safety and prevention, and integration of knowledge and understanding.

The five content subareas of the MTEL Health Education Test contribute to both a multiple-choice section which contains between 75 and 85 questions, as well as to an open-response section. The multiple-choice section accounts for 80% of the overall test score.

The open-response section poses two questions which offer the candidate the opportunity to demonstrate depth of knowledge, theoretical understanding and ability to apply knowledge in practical scenarios. The written brief-essay responses will be evaluated by looking at the candidate's degree of success in four areas. First, did the candidate's response fulfill the question's purpose? Second, did it demonstrate sufficient subject knowledge? Third, did the essay provide supporting evidence? Fourth, was the writer's argument or position a sound and rational one? The open-response section of the MTEL Health Education Test provides the remaining 20% of the test score.
