The MTEL History Test is structured into two sections. The multiple- choice section presents 100 multiple-choice questions drawn from several subareas. The second section consists of two open-response writing prompts which require brief essays.
The multiple-choice section of the MTEL History Test offers four possible choices for each question. The total weight for this subarea is 80% of the final test score. Thirty percent of the multiple-choice questions on the MTEL History Test are on U.S. History. Twenty-five percent of the questions pertain to World History; and 25% consider Geography, Government and Economics.
The remaining 20% of the final test score is dependent upon two open-response questions that offer evidence of the candidate's understanding of the material, both abstractly and concretely. Each of the MTEL History Test open-response essays will range between 150 and 300 words, and are each worth 10% of the total score. Candidates should anticipate spending about 30 minutes on each of the open-response essay compositions.
