The MTEL Middle School Mathematics Test assesses candidates' competency in the area of middle school mathematics through both multiple-choice questions and an open-response format.
The multiple-choice section of the MTEL Middle School Mathematics Test focuses on five subareas. The most important of these is Patterns, Relations, and Algebra, which is addressed in 25 multiple-choice questions which offer four possible answers. The subarea of Geometry and Measurement considers 18 multiple-choice questions, while the subarea of Number Sense and Operations asks a total of 15 questions. The fourth subarea, Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability, weighs in with 12 questions. The final subarea, Trigonometry, Calculus and Discrete Mathematics, posits 10 questions. In total, the multiple-choice section of the MTEL Middle School Mathematics Test contributes 80% of the total test score.
The remaining 20% is accounted for by two open-response writing prompts. These prompts discuss some aspect of middle school level mathematics on a theoretical or practical level, or a combination of the two. The candidate is given the opportunity to demonstrate depth of understanding as well as degree of competency in two brief written responses.
