The MTEL Music Test evaluates candidates' knowledge and understanding of test objectives through both multiple-choice questions and an open-response section.
The multiple choice section of the MTEL Music Test looks at three subareas. The first, Music Theory and Analysis, is broken down further into Music Theory and Aural Analysis. This section accounts for 33% of the total test score. The subsection of Music History and Literature is subdivided into Music History and Literature, and Aural Analysis. Like the previous section, this section also contributes 33% to the total score. The Music Education subsection is the final one in the multiple-choice question section, and contributes 14%, for a total contribution of 80% to the complete MTEL Music Test score.
The remaining 20% of the final score is based upon two open- response questions that address the fourth subsection of the MTEL Music Test, Integration of Knowledge and Understanding. In this subsection, candidates demonstrate their understanding of knowledge as well as their ability to apply theoretical or abstract concepts in a real- world matrix.
