MTEL Visual Art Test Breakdown
Creative Expression has six subareas with a total of 27 to 29 questions.
- Elements of Art and Principles of Design: define and analyze how the following are used and for what purposes: line, texture, color, form, value, space and shape, repetition, balance, emphasis, contrast, unity, and variety.
- FIne Arts: uses and advantages of various tools, materials, techniques, methods, processes and technologies, maintenance and safety issues, and making the proper choice to achieve the desired results.
- Communication and Design Arts: uses and advantages of various tools, materials, techniques, methods, processes and technologies, maintenance and safety issues, and making the proper choice to achieve the desired results.
- Architecture and Environmental Arts: uses and advantages of various tools, materials, techniques, methods, processes and technologies, maintenance and safety issues, and making the proper choice to achieve the desired results.
- Folk Arts and Crafts: uses and advantages of various tools, materials, techniques, methods, processes and technologies, maintenance and safety issues, and making the proper choice to achieve the desired results.
- Art as Communication: ways of communicating ideas, expressing the artist’s thoughts and experiences through different media choices, interpretation and meaning of subjects, themes and symbols, and why various features and principles evoke a particular response.
Art and Culture has seven subareas with a total of 32 to 43 questions.
- Connections: role of art in recording, reflecting and shaping history and culture, universal themes and their use and expression in different cultures and eras, and the impact of society, politics, the economy and technology.
- North American Artworks: eras, themes, subjects and symbols from ancient times through the 20th century and how the art reflects the different cultures and their aesthetic values.
- Central and South American Artworks: eras, themes, subjects and symbols from ancient times through the 20th century and how the art reflects the different cultures and their aesthetic values.
- European Artworks from Ancient Times through the Middle Ages: eras, themes, subjects and symbols and how the art reflects the different cultures and their aesthetic values.
- European Artworks from the Renaissance through the 20th Century: eras, themes, subjects and symbols and how the art reflects the different cultures and their aesthetic values.
- North African, Sub-Saharan and Middle Eastern Artworks: eras, themes, subjects and symbols from ancient times through the 20th century and how the art reflects the different cultures and their aesthetic values.
- Asian and Oceania Artworks: eras, themes, subjects and symbols from ancient times through the 20th century and how the art reflects the different cultures and their aesthetic values.
Visual Art and Other Disciplines has four subareas with a total of 18 to 20 questions.
- Functions, Purposes, Theories and Philosophies: analyze artwork from various eras and cultures as individual, community and cultural communication, decoration and entertainment, and its impact on everyday life.
- Other Art Forms: compare and contrast materials, techniques, technologies and processes with dance, music and theater, combining the different art forms, and the parallel between the development of all of them through history.
- Other Academic Disciplines: relationship of the content and concepts and methods of using visual art to understand other disciplines.
- Human Development: children’s artistic and aesthetic development and the many ways training in the arts helps in analyzing, perception, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision making and appreciation of human diversity.
